Why did the calculus student who didn't know the fundamental theorem of calculus fail the entire year of calculus?
I don't know the details about this particular student, but I would hazard a guess that he didn't know quite a few other things about calculus, either. In any case, if you don't know the fundamental theorem - at least, if you don't know how to apply it in practice - you'll have serious problems with many different problems - specifically when you need to do definite integrals.

If you have ever read the novel "Halo" you can see (in the first book) that Master Chief, had forgotten how much gravity was on the space-craft, and used calculus to determine the acceleration of gravity by timing the drop of a bolt and figuring out everything else. Calculus is especially important for any kind of profession that involves projectiles.

Because calculus applications are almost infinite. In fact, every branch of science uses calculus : physics, chemistry, biology, social studies, economics, etc. Calculus is a universal language that can be used to answer bunches of questions. Using calculus, you can solve various problems including the acceleration of planets in orbit, the kinetic energy of a car in motion, the equivalence point of a chemical reaction, the maximal profit a business can make, the lenght of any curved figure or the area and volume of eccentrical shapes, the electric field produced by a charged object, ... Calculus is interesting because you can use it everywhere!

No, it's quite different. The SAT I is split into three sections: critical reading, math, and writing. That's all it tests. The SAT II subject tests are specific to individual academic subjects. So you can take an SAT subject test in Calculus AB, in physics, etc. The SAT subject tests are kind of close in idea to the AP exams - they are focused on specific academic subjects. Many, many colleges require the SAT I - the general test. Few actually *require* any SAT subject tests, although some do, and if you take them and do well, it can help your application even at schools that don't require them.
