The Signature program is a way for Wescom Credit Union to get low-income members -- and/or those who don't transact a sufficiently high level of credit union business -- to take their business elsewhere.

Signature memberships were introduced in 2010 in conjunction with a new $5 per month membership fee, devised to offset the loss of revenue from charging $35 for covering debit card overdrafts.* The only way to avoid the new fees is to attain five Signature "points," where one point can be earned for using Direct Deposit, another for keeping a minimum balance above $1,000, and so on.

(*The practice of covering debit card overdrafts without consumer authorization, a major revenue source for financial institutions, was outlawed in 2010.)
