I'm basing this on 12 gauge wire. To make a western union short tie splice take approximately 3 inches of exposed wire on the two wires you plan on connecting. about half way bend each wire to a 90 degree angle. Cross the wires at the bends so one faces up and one faces down. Wrap the excess wire from each one around around the wire it is going to connect to. You should get about three wraps on each side. Solder and shield as necessary.

To make a western union splice put a 90 degree bend on the two wire ends. Inter lock the two ends together. Wind the opposite tail ends tightly from the 90 degree bend up onto the opposite wire. This was the old Western Union Telegraph splice that was used to repair broken telegraph wires.
