What you do might depend on a lot of factors:

  • The type and size of animal - pet, domesticated or wild
  • Your location
  • Available public services
  • Cause of death

If the animal is a known pet or is possibly stock from a farm, you can call those folks. If it has ID, you can trace the ID. If a pet's origins are unknown, you can call your local animal control department. They may or may not come to your place to remove it. If they do, they will probably check to see if the animal was microchipped. If they don't or can't, they will likely give you advice about how to handle and dispose of the carcass.

If it is wild, you might be on your own - but you can still call animal control for advice.

If you don't have animal control services or community waste disposal services and live on a large enough property, you might have to bury the animal.

There might also be some private removal service in your area.

If you end up handling it yourself, you must make sure to be extra-cautious. Make sure you double-glove your hands and double-bag the carcass. The animal could have been mortally injured in a fight or accident, shot, diseased or died of natural causes. Small animals are easy. Larger ones are problematic.

We have had a few experiences:

  • Birds hit our patio windows. The ones that don't recover are placed under a bush for nature to take its course.
  • We found an unfamiliar dead cat in our back yard. Animal Control came out to check for a microchip, but there was none. They also said that once rigor sets in, the chips sometimes cannot be read. We have no idea what killed it, but there was a small bloody spot on its side. Animal Control offered to remove it since they were there, and I let them. We sent out a notice about the kitty through our Neighborhood Watch, but no one ever acknowledged it was theirs.
  • We also found a large dead skunk in our backyard. Per the town's advice, we double-gloved, double-bagged and put it in the trash pick-up - which just happened to be that day.
