To Own a hamster you need things such as
1. Water bottle (You need to fill the bottle with water everyday, you also need a hanger for the bottle)
2. Glass Cage with WELL-VENTILATED TOP, or a wire cage with a SOLID floor and spacing no more than 1/2 inch.
3. Food Dish (You need to buy food also, use Ecotrition or Supreme Hazel)
4. Bag of bedding (DO NOT USE PINE PRODUCTS. Change once a week as needed)
5. Wheel 8in or larger (smaller models cause back problems and pain for Syrians) WITHOUT WIRE - use Comfort Wheel or Silent Spinner. Hamsters can get their little feet caught between wires and seriously injure themselves.
6) House - wooden or plastic (remove if the hamster chews the plastic) home for it to sleep in
7) Small fruit tree branches for chewing, available at most pet stores (hamster teeth never stop growing, so they need something to gnaw at)
8) Potty - Little John Hi-Corner potties are only a few dollars and work perfectly.
*Give hamsters fresh food as well - they should have a small amount of vegetables daily (make sure you look up the list of foods they're allergic to first, though) and you can give them a treat in the form of fruit and grain snacks once every 2 weeks or so.
Also, use toilet paper rolls or hamster accessories to give your hamster things to do other than run on their wheel - they love climbing and exploring!
This is what I have found that works the best for caring for my little hammy.

A hamster doesn't need any shots unless it gets ill.
yes
Yes.
Well, they need a hamster wheel for excercising with, food, which I recommend to be put in a bowl, a plastic hamster water bottle for the hamster to drink from, play toys for the hamster to play with and lastly, you need to have wood chips on the ground, so that the hamster's feet will be protected.
Erm, I haven't seen a hamster swim exactly... But if your hamster can swim, you would need to supervise your hamster in case he/she drowns or fatigue.
No, unless the hamster has rabies. if the hamster is a household pet, then no. Hamsters rarely bite, anyway.
You don't need one, but it is best to have one. Hamster balls enable hamsters to get a session of good excersise. Although most hamster cages have wheels which provides excersise hamster balls enable you to controll the amount of excersise a hamster gets.
Any hamster is easy to hold but is depends on how you treat it but if you want to hold a hamster you need to check its water and food and of course the hamster SO ALWAYS REMEMBER TO TREAT YOUR HAMSTER WITH RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just how reliable does a hamster toy need to be?
Your hamster doesn't need to go in the ball everyday , If your hamster has an exercise wheel then you can put them in the ball when you want to. I have 2 hamsters and they both have hamster balls and i only put them in it 3 times a week at the most :)
I had this exact problem with one of my hamsters. This is serious and can cause the hamster a lot of pain. It is likely the hamster will need to be put down. You need to take the hamster to the vets as soon as possible, as it is not fair to keep it alive under such circumstances.
