In order for cellular respiration to occur, glucose and 2 ATP molecules are needed to start glycolysis. In order for the next stage of respiration to occur, the Krebs Cycle, oxygen must be present, otherwise fermentation occurs and there is a buildup of ethyl alcohol and/or lactic acid.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The above is over complex.

For respiration one needs

  • a fuel (sugar from food)
  • and oxygen with which to burn the fuel.
  • One then also needs a mean of removing the waste products produced by burning the fuel.
