Possibly one day it will be removed, but there are no current plans to remove the Australian 5 cent coin from circulation in the foreseeable future.

The Royal Australian Mint is very conscious of making changes to the currency and do not do so lightly.

From 1966 to 2007, approximately 820 million Australian 50 cent have been put into circulation. The final figures for 2008 are not yet available. There were no 50 cent coins issued in 1967, 1968, 1986, 1987 and 1992.

From 1966 to 2009 inclusive, there have been over 850 million Australian 50 cent coins minted for general circulation.

A good many of those, especially the older coins, will have been withdrawn due to wear and tear, and others due to damage. Many will be in coin collections and tucked away in long forgotten money boxes.

There are no Australian general circulation 5 cent coins of any significant collector value, and then, they would have to be in mint uncirculated condition to get whatever small value they may have.

Representative examples of all years of issue of Australian 5 cent coins are still in circulation, so unless they are part of a Proof or Uncirculated mint set or are individual Proof or Uncirculated coins and in absolute mint condition, they are worth 5 cents.

The only Australian 5 cent coin to have more than a couple of Dollars as a collector coin would be the 1972 coin because there were significantly fewer of them minted than in any other year.

An Australian 1972 cupro-nickel 5 cent coin (QE II), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to $35 AUD.

There were 8.256 million minted.

A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation.

All years of issue of the Australian 5 cent coin are still potentially in circulation and are therefore worth 5 cents.

None are rare or valuable.

Uncirculated mint condition coins have some value, but will need to be in their original Royal Australian Mint packaging.

The 1972 Australian 5 cent coin had the fewest number minted at about 8.256 million coins. An "uncirculated mint condition" coin might fetch up to $35 AUD.
