Christ is a King and His kingdom is the Kingdom of Heaven. Like any kingdom we have a right to be there only under certain conditions and being poor in spirit is one way to fulfil these conditions.

Mankind is born in a state of disobedience to God, who calls us to love Him and each other. Because of this we are cut off from Him forever- and He is the source of everything good. In order to receive His salvation, which restores us to the place of His blessing, you have to understand this- you will not be made rich until you first understand that you are poor. That is what He meant- those who confess their sin will be saved from it, when they put their faith in Him. A life of seeking wrong things that don't satisfy and only lead to misery, followed by an eternal punishment of hell is the ultimate poverty. Those who know this are blessed because they will be saved.
Further thoughts:
The entire phrase is "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3 KJV), so we're talking spiritually here. It indicates that those who realize that they have a spiritual need("...realize their need for Him..."(NLT)), will work to fill that need, and thereby LEARN about God and be blessed. When we realize we're hungry, we eat....when we KNOW we're thirsty, we drink....and are satisfied.
The same spiritually, if we are conscious of our spiritual need, we'll work to fill it, and be blessed.

∙ 15y agoIt means that those who have a desire to know of God but have yet to have the opportunity to hear the word. When they do they will be blessed with a testimony of the truth of all things. They who will hold fast to what the hear will be blessed in the kingdom of God.

The poor in spirit are those who acknowledge their own helplessness, they are humble and lowly in their own eyes. They see their want, bewail their guilt, and thirst after a Redeemer. They sense their spiritual need and find it supplied in the Lord.
Jesus is contrasting the character of a person who is ready for salvation to the attitude of the scribes and pharisees of His day
