The answer depends on where you want to work... in the United States, to work for the government as an accountant you need at least a bachelor's degree in the field. Many private firms want someone who has earned a master's degree in either accounting or auditing, or an MBA with a specialty in one or the other.

However, the important qualification for many positions is post-bachelor's: you must take and pass the examination to be a Certified Public Accountant. The certification is separate from the academic degree, and has its own qualifications to be met.
