That said, nearly all admitted students [approx. 98%] fall within the top 10% of their high school graduating classes. Okay, first, great job on shooting for the Ivy League! Getting into college is as competitive as a NBA playoff game, which could come with all the sweat, cheers, and boos. Of course you need a high GPA to get into Harvard University, it demonstrates that you are dedicated to your coursework and can comprehend a variety of subjects. But GPA isn't everything, trust me on that! For example, say you take one math course each year of high school, never getting above Algebra but getting all A's, then you've never pushed yourself and haven't demonstrated that you can handle college-level math. BUT, if you attempt harder courses like Calculus and get all B's, that would be a plus. Remember when I said grades aren't everything, Harvard doesn't like lonely bookworms anymore. They want people who step out of the comfort zone of books. You can do this by joining school or community groups (be prepared to explain why you joined), volunteering, working, studying abroad/traveling, entering contests, etc. Another thing to consider are your recommendations, Harvard is going to want to see how others view you, because your GPA, essay, and activities are one-sided (If you could get a non-generic letter from a Harvard alum that's a big plus). Here's the kicker that most students don't consider: THE COMPETITION! You need to be a standout candidate among the people who are applying to get in at the same time as you. This is the reason why you can apply to LSU and Yale, get into Yale and not LSU...don't forget your competition. NOW WITH ALL THAT SAID, don't apply to Harvard just to apply, make sure they have a major you want to pursue and that their program is innovative enough for your future field, that you want to live in the Boston-area, and don't mind being at a constant state of GO for four years...there is reason why Harvard is Harvard. Good luck, don't give up, and try. You don't want to think ten years later, "I wonder if I could have gotten into Harvard?"
