In 1884 he became Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge after getting his BA and MA degrees at Trinity College, which is a college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England.

It was at the Cavendish Laboratory, in the Department of Physics, that he did much of his research related to the Nobel Prize.

In 1918, he was made Master of Trinity College.
