Some physical features found in Mexico would be as follows:

  • The eastern, western and southern mountain ranges known as Sierra Madre Oriental, Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur, respectively.
  • The Mexican Central Plateau or Mexican Altiplano, delimited by these three mountain ranges.
  • The peninsulas that shape Mexico like a cornucopia: the southeastern, flat, triangular-shaped peninsula known as Yucatan peninsula bordering Guatemala and Belize; the northwestern Baja California peninsula, also known as Baja, is the long but thin land mass connected to Mexico, but separated from most of the mainland by the Gulf of California or Sea of Cortes.
  • The Gulf of Mexico, located on the eastern side of Mexico and delimited by the Florida and Yucatan peninsulas.
  • The Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts, spanning most of northwestern Mexico from the Baja California peninsula to the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range.
  • Several active and inactive volcanoes, such as the Popocatepetl (5426 m/17802 ft), Iztaccihuatl (5230 m/17159 ft), Paricutin (2800 m/9186 ft), Chichon (1205 m/3953 ft) and Pico de Orizaba (5636 m/18491 ft).
  • Several lakes and rivers, such as the Rio Grande river, which defines most of the US-Mexico border; Lake Chapala in central-western Mexico and close to the city of Guadalajara, is the largest lake.

Much of Mexico's geography is desert areas as well as semi to tropical areas as one moves south towards the areas in Central America. Other geographic zones are similar for example like the US State of Florida, which is for the most part semi tropical. Other parts of Mexico's climate and land forms include high rugged mountains and lower level coastal plains.
