No, current generation PS3's cannot play PS2 games.
The first generation (20GB/60GB) had PS2 hardware emulation, the second generation (60GB/80GB) had partial PS2 software emulation, the third generation (40GB/80GB/160GB) and the current (slim) models do not have reverse compatibility.

∙ 12y agoWhen the PS3 was released they tried to make it play PS2 games and received complaints because it was not perfect. They stopped making the models that could and only PS3 models with the 4 USB ports have the capability to play the PS2 games, although not every title is playable

∙ 15y ago40GB, 80GB, or 160GB PS3s can not play PS2 games. NO MATTER WHAT. Do not listen to anyone that says they can play them. On the other hand, 20GB and 60GB PS3s can play them. Actually all ps3s can play ps2 games on them no matter what the gb. I have a 40gb ps3 and i play ps3 games on it all the time. But you have to go to the PlayStation Store and download the free ps2 content to play ps2 games on a ps3.

∙ 15y agoThe PlayStation 2 is not capable of playing any games developed for the PlayStation 3. Firstly, the PS3 was developed after the PS2, using new technology. Secondly, some of that new technology includes the Blu-Ray disc, a disc format used by the PS3 but not by the PlayStation 2 - so the PS2 is completely incapable of reading PS3-format discs.
