This is an adage that means if ever want to do or complete something in life their is always something that would be hard to do in order to get there.

Glory is an oft misunderstood term. Some equate glorious with marvelous, but this is incorrect.
In history, arguably, the single most glorious moment was the last stand of the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. Some 2400 hundred Greek Warriors centered around an elite force of 300 Spartans held off an estimated 1 million Persians for three days. At the end of the 2nd day, seeing their position as compromised Leonidas, the king of the Spartans (present at the battle), ordered the other Greeks to withdraw. They did so while the Spartans spent their lives on day three to buy time for the other Greeks to escape. No Spartan survived. This, then, is the classic path to Glory. Three days in the hot Aegean sun with bronze pots on your head dealing death to the bad guys with sharp sticks, after which you get to die a nasty brutal bloody ugly death . . .
Glorious.
It is ugly, but that is glory. Glory and suckage go hand in hand. The greater the suckage the greater the potential glory. The price of glory is misery. No misery, no glory. See also: No Guts No Glory. (the guts part usually spilled on the ground or otherwise abused).
