This is potential chemical energy. It needs something else to make the energy release. In the case of food it is enzymes in the stomach which enable us and animals to digest the food to get the energy from it. In the case of oil it requires oxygen to burn it.

What sort of energy is stored in stretched or twisted things?

Potential energy, or tension.

What type of energy is stored when things are bent or stretched?

elastic potential energy

What is an objects total and potential energy?

An objects total kinetic and potential energy is when both things are moving (kinetic) and the energy is stored in the object (potential)

What are Kinetic and Potential energy?

Kinetic energy is the energy that make things move. They are known as the "Movement Energy". Potential energy is the energy stored in object, waiting to be used.

Thermal energy is energy stored by things that stretch or compress?

Thermal energy is not the energy stored by things that stretch or compress. This type of energy applies to strain potential energy. Thermal energy refers to motion energy due to the random vibration of atoms or molecules within an object.

Energy stored by things attracted to each other by the force of gravity is what type of potential energy?

Gravitational

What energy is stored in bent things?

If the bent object will spring back to it's original shape when you let go of it, then the stored energy is known as elastic potential energy.

What is the difference between potential energy and light energy?

They are two completely different things. Light energy is electromagnetic waves. (EM). Potential energy is the energy stored within matter.

WHAT IS AN OBJECT TOTAL KINETIC AND POTENTIAL ENERGY?

An objects total kinetic and potential energy is when both things are moving (kinetic) and the energy is stored in the object (potential)

Why is potential energy called stored energy and into what kind of energy does it usually change to?

potential energy is found in things like a compressed spring, or a weight that has been raised to drive a clock. In it's static position, before the energy is released, it is being "stored". It usually changes into "kinetic" energy, causing something to move, or giving it momentum. Some of that energy will also be consumed by friction in the mechanism creating thermal energy.

The type of energy a ball has when you hold it above the ground?

Potential energy is a stored energy due to the gravity and height above the ground. In physics the formula for potential energy is: PE = mgy where m = mass (kg), g = acceleration due to gravity (m/s^2), y = height (m) What if there is no height? Well, by simply letting y = 0 and multiplying 0 to m and g, we get PE = 0. Therefore potential energy does not exist and shows it is only present when the object has a height above the ground.

Why is potential energy referred to as potential energy?

Because theres no other way to put it! Basically Potential energy is energy that is stored within a body that can be released at some stage due to an external effect. The most basic example is gravitational potential energy where energy used to lift a body is stored inside it and when you let go that same energy is used to pull it back down to earth.
