Many of our generation, when turning the pages of history, have the tendency to take for granted the way the destiny of Mauritius has unfolded since its independence in 1968. It was indeed a challenge and uneasy task for Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) to forge ahead in a highly unconducive environment and chart out the way for modern Mauritius.

  1. The years preceding the independence of Mauritius were shrouded by lot of uncertainties on the future of Mauritius. Many political analysts of those days, both foreign and local, had severe doubts on the nationhood of Mauritius. In their opinion, the inherent weaknesses and disadvantages of the island, in terms of its small size, geographical isolation, resource-deficiency, ethnic tensions, political conflicts and climatic hazards, all conspired to undermine the future prospects for Mauritius as an independent state.
