there are no real advantages, for example, before life on earth became multicellular there was a period of time called snowball earth, at this time the entire surface of the earth was covered in ice like a global ice age. i am doubhtfull that multicellular organisms could have survived this, however singalcellular organisms could survive because of there extrordinary ressillience to things, there are bacteias that live in boilling water, and others that live in sulphur vents. places that no multicellular organism could live. multicellular organisms evolved by accident, so there dosent realy have to be any advantages for them. muliticellular organisms came into existence because certain cells secreated a protine (i forget the name of this protine) this protine required oxygen to manufacture, and there was very little dissolved oxygen in the oceans at the time, then when snowball earth melted, the water from the ice and the glaciers poured into the oceans, increaceing the ammount of dissolved oxygen in the seas, and consequently these cells produced a lot more of this protine. it turns out that this protine sticks cells together, so when they split (mitosis) instead of drifting away from each other (as was conventional) they stuck together, thusly multicellular life was created
