A junior in high school is in his or her 3rd year of high school. This is the 11th grade. Most juniors are 16-17 years old, give or take a year depending on when the student started school, and whether or not they applied themselves.

It isn't age that determines if you are a junior or not it is if you have completed the required class work for the freshman and sophomore years. There are people who are 5th year seniors because they haven't enough units to graduate. When you are in high school each class you take is 5 units and if you flunk a class you have to take it over to graduate. Many freshmen don't realize the reality of this and end up with problems because they played around for a year.
