Chemistry's origin is deeply rooted in alchemy. Alchemy, at its core level, is the study of techniques of transforming one element into another. At its superficial level, alchemy is commonly associated with ancient alchemists (practitioners of alchemy) trying to convert some naturally occurring metal to gold.

It was called alchemy, and the modern word chemistry comes from that word. The main goal of alchemy was to turn lead (or other poor metals) into gold. Of course, now we realize this isn't possible with chemical means.

Depends on your definition of "chemistry". Modern day chemistry is derived from ancient practices of alchemy and herbalism for the most part.

The main purpose of alchemy was to make gold out of regular metals and therefore required the investigation of the properties of metals and their reaction with other objects. Nowadays, chemists look to make certain materials and chemicals out of other.

In ancient herbalism, people looked for plants that had certain properties to do things from cure ailments to promote strength and fertility. In present day chemistry labs, scientists often do the same thing but with a larger variety in resources such as petroleum and with a larger knowledge of why and how they are able to function.
