Even though canines are intelligent creatures, dolphins are even smarter. They can understand complex requests and carry them out, and communicate with each other using a sophisticated system of sounds. They live in family groups and mourn the loss of individuals in that group, just as we do. And, unlike domestic dogs, dolphins do not look to people for instructions and solutions; they function independently of humans. Except for the great apes, dolphins and whales may be the most intelligent mammals next to homo sapiens.
