Platypus and Echidna are monotremes that burrow and lay eggs under ground! When the eggs hatch, they will suckle on the mother just as all mammals do. Fish lay eggs in dark places and reptiles tend to bury their eggs under ground also. Spiders lay eggs in dark locations and if I'm a parasitic insect, I will find a living organism to lay my eggs in. Fly's will lay there eggs in decaying matter. The Burrowing Owl lays its' eggs under ground and It may be dark in the attic of an abandoned building where the Barn owl builds its' nest.
