1962, June - ran to be a GA state senator candidate in the Democratic primary. He appeared to lose by a few votes, but claimed voter fraud which was upheld and so became the candidate. He then won the election in November.

1964 -easily won a second term as state senator

1966 - ran in the GA primary for governor- finished third

1970- won the GA primary for governor, then elected governor.

December, 1974 declared he was running for President.

1975- started winning primaries, momentum built and was nominated for President in July.
