The most memorable event of 1492 was of course Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Americas. However, two other events set the stage for his journey to be able to occur. The first was the Conquest of Granada, which was the last of the reconquest of Spain, liberating it from Moor rule. The second was the Edict of Expulsion, which gave Jews living in Spain four months to either convert to Christianity or leave. It is said Columbus' voyage was financed from booty and money from these previous two events.
