Three ways something can accelerate are 1. increase speed 2. change direction 3. both.
1.speed up 2.slow down 3. turn
An outside force acts on it, it applies a force to something, or it converts mass into energy. Not sure about the last one.
an object can accelerate both up and down
Accelerate is already a verb. For example, "to accelerate something" is an action and therefore a verb. Another verb would be speed. "To speed something up".

What you have to apply to get something to move, for example. What you have to provide to prevent something falling, for example. Or to get it to accelerate.
I don't know of any other way besides acting on it with a net non-zero force.
A roller coaster can accelerate using an electromagnetic field or linear motor. Another way for a roller coaster to accelerate is by using a hydraulic launch method. using cables to catapult the ride forward.

Slowing down and Speeding up
in terms of speed and direction , in what ways can an object accelerate
Force = mass x acceleration. Any amount of force will accelerate a mass. The amount of force you want to use depends on how quickly you want to accelerate something.
