Autism is largely a genetic disorder but there are other causes of the disease as well. Research indicates that autism develops very early after conception and may be due to many of the same causes of other birth defects.

Probably the first key factor to bear in mind is that the person is a person before they are anything else. It is probably also useful to see the autistic spectrum as a sliding scale of many complex conditions with so-called 'normality' at one end and virtual catatonia at the other end. The majority of 'autistic' people lay somewhere between the two states but every person is an individual and their particualr personality traits and requirements will be individual to them.

Can obesity in mothers lead to autism in children?

No, obesity in mothers cannot lead to autism in children. Although we don't know the exact causes of autism it is largely due to genetic factors and genetic mutation, there is some evidence to link certain environmental factors such as use of certain antidepressants with autism but it's not conclusive. There is nothing to suggest obesity in the mother would lead to autism in her child.

Why do environmental factors affect people with autism?

No, as far as we know there are no environmental factors that lead to autism - autism isn't 'triggered' it is a neurological variation. This however does not stop people using autism to try to support their agenda, for example some people claim vaccines, GMO's or pesticides cause autism.

Is there any genetic link in autism?

Yes, genetic influences on autism are believed to be 74%-98%. This figure comes from a large-scale research project on twins, where one twin was allistic and the other was Autistic. We do not know exactly what factors lead to autism, but as a normal human variant it was bound to be genetic.
