1. Speak the same 'language' your students speak, with regard to the students' age level, maturity level and understanding level. Example; One can reach teens more easily using role modeling and "what if" situations that are relevant to teens, or those to which teens can relate.
2. Teach with passion. If you are only trying to teach good conduct and correct manners for the sole purpose of teaching, it may not work. You have to truly understand why manners are important and need to get that across to the students.
3. If you are teaching table manners, you must serve food. This helps with their practice and keeps blood sugar levels from dropping.
4. Use your own personal experiences to show you can empathize with your students.
5. Give your students sentences to finish. Example; I think it is really rude when _________________. Or I feel very uncomfortable socially when _______________. Do not let them name names, or gossip.
I have found all of these have helped me in the last 23 years of teaching etiquette to kids and adults of all ages.
