Arabians can have several uses. They make great buggy pullers, they are fantastic dressage horses, Western Pleasure, hunter/jumper... you name it! Mostly seen in costume and endurance. But they are widely and mostly found in English riding, but Western is not uncommon.
An Arabian is used for the same things other horses are used for. They are good allrounders, but excellent at endurance. This is because they were bred to carry their owners across Arabian deserts. They are loyal, but can also be fizzy.
A Arabian horse makes a good desert horse because of the dished head and flaring nostril makes for a huge oxygen intake. Arched neck that keeps the windpipe clear to carry air to the lungs. Deep chest and well-sprung ribs leaving plenty of room for lung expansion. Strong legs and strong back for carrying weight. Also they have black skin under their hair and all around their eyes that protects them from the sun.
Yes Arabian horses are good at Western riding. The Arabian Horse Association has competitions for Arabs and part Arabs all over the country (USA). For a Arabian to be good at Western riding it will need a more stocky build and a bit more slope to it's croup than a typically Arabian, But in general any Arab can go in Western tack.
