Due to their belief in the karma one accumulate's during one's life dictating their next life they believe that any animal born to be tested upon is purposeful and that that animal should dutifully be tested upon so as to perform their dharma (duty) and procure good karma which may improve their next rebirth.

Well sometimes we have to kill the animal to get the things we need to test but most of the time we don't kill them. It's not great when we have to kill the animal as we have wasted some of its life
