accordions use sets (read blocks) of metal 'free-reeds' to produce their sound. These are known as voices. If an instrument has four voices it has four sets of reeds on the right hand side of the instrument.

In a typical piano-Accordion there are between three and five of these sets of reeds available to every key on the keyboard. These are controlled using leavers known as 'couplers'.

When you press down a key, a pad lifts up revealing the holes that lead to the reeds and the air is able to be pushed through them, making the sound. Couplers serve a function whereby metal plates are placed in front of the holes that lead to the reeds, thus stopping those particular reed blocks from being able to play.

There are also often couplers on the left hand side of the instrument (the one controlling chords and bass notes).

The effect of all these different combinations of reeds is to produce different timbres. On my four voice piano accordion I can play a high reed, a high reed, a low reed (one 8ve below), or the two together. I can also combine the high reed with another reed tuned slightly sharp or another slightly flat or any combination of the three. I can also play all four at once. These combinations are all controlled by the couplers.

Where can you get accordion repair?

The best place to get your accordion repaired is from your local accordion repairer if possible. This may not always be the case and so your next best option is to try and contact the manufacturer of your accordion. Whatever you do, do not attempt to repair your accordion yourself if you're not sufficiently qualified as you could damage your accordion more. It is important to understand a few basics of accordion repair and if you look after your accordion properly it will not need a lot of repair work.
