The object of Backgammon is to move your game pieces from the starting point to your opponent's starting point, and then remove them from the board. So, it is a race around the board, basically. If you leave one of your pieces exposed, it can be placed in the middle of the board, and you have to roll to get it back from there before continuing with other pieces. Additionally, it returns to the starting area, losing any progress it had made previously.

Lots of practice, and observation and careful analysis of the sorts of moves that good players make; taking advice from experts; reading and thinking about articles on backgammon tactics. Learning how to succeed with the running game, the blocking game, and the back game: they all require quite different tactics. And learning how to successfully counter your opponent's strategy.

Do not play against mature gentlemen of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or West Asian origin (they have probably played Tavla in cafes/bars all their life!) -- unless, of course, you are seeking to learn about their strategies and tactics.

One tactic that is probably (? I say probably) good advice is to try for a running game if you believe your opponent to be more skilled at the game than you are, but a hit and block type game if you believe that you are more skilled than your opponent. But always take the current state of the board and the dice rolls into account!

Then, along with the moves to win games, you need to learn judgement in use of the doubling cube for matches and/or gambles

Where was Backgammon created?

The game of backgammon is commonly known as one of the oldest board games between two players. The game dates back over 5000 years, and many areas claim to have 'invented' backgammon. The earliest known record of a backgammon-like game were the Egyptian/Iraqi games of senet and the Royal Game of Ur, dating back to around 3000 BC. The game of 'nard' was popular in ancient Persia (now Iran) and has been found to be existent in a similar time. The Ancient Romans and Indians of 400 AD had games of backgammon, the Chinese, French and Spanish all had their own variants of the game too. But the first use of the word 'backgammon' was found in the Oxford English Dictionary of 1650, with rules at the time very similar to ours. Overall, we can safely say that backgammon originated somewhere in the Egyptian or Middle Eastern region 5000 years ago.
