It depends on the species of caterpillar. Some are carnivorous, eating insects or other caterpillar species. Some are cannibalistic. At least one Hawaiian species of caterpillar traps snails in silk traps and eats them.

A caterpillar doesn't necessarily have prey. They are herbivores (plant eaters), so they eat a wide variety of different green leaves, depending on what species and where in the world they are located

Most caterpillars are herbivores but there are one or two predatory caterpillar species (eg that of the Large Blue butterfly which feeds on the grubs of red ants).
