Anal or rectal itching (Pruritus ani) is a common ailment many people suffer from. The main symptom is the irritation of the skin at the exit of the rectum, known as the anus, causing the desire to scratch.
A number of things can cause this ranging from poor hygiene, to yeast infection, to hemorrhoids. A certain type of human parasitic worm infestation can also cause an intense itch (Threadworms and Pinworms).

Occasionally discharge from the rectum from piles or prolapsed mucosa can cause soreness and itching and lastly it can be due to Pin worm infection, Enterobius vermicularis, which will require medical treatment. A dermatological opinion is essential to exclude skin diseases

∙ 7y agoThe most common reasons for anal itching include:
- a film of fecal matter or more than a film being left on the skin
- fecal matter on the skin after flatulence (passing gas)
- external hemorrhoids
- an intestinal parasite that is excreted with the stool / bowel movement
Try these measures first:
- Buy White Petroleum Jelly, e.g. Trademark Vaseline.
- Take a bath or shower; use mild (not perfumed) soap.
- PAT the area dry. Do not vigorously rub the area..
- Fold toilet paper so there is a thick layer. Pull a wad of Vaseline onto the toilet paper.
- Apply to anal area - external only.
- IF just an irritation, the bathing and Vaseline should help within a couple days. It will immediately soothe and protect the skin.
- Reapply after every bowel movement AFTER first wiping as usual.
If hemorrhoids, you can buy:
- Tucks (brand name) external medicated "towelettes" to put on the area. It burns then cools the spot.
- Hemorrhoidal cream over the counter.
- Hemorrhoidal cream by prescription.
If these measures do not help, you will need to see a doctor.
