A multiprocessor system is any device with multiple processors(processing cores).

These days, you can buy up to an 8 core PC, (apple's new mac pro) http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=485

But most people with gaming PC's have at least a duo-core processor. They used to be very expensive, but now they are affordable. But you'll usually hear that term associated with PC or computing devices. It makes everything faster, especially multitasking.

A multiprocessor system is a computer with many processors (CPUs) all working in conjunction to run one or more programs. The processors may be close together communicating via shared memory or DMA transfers or widely separated using network protocols over long distance telecommunications links or anywhere in between, depending on the goals and requirements of the multiprocessor system.

Can a multithread solution using multiple user level threads achieve better performance on a multiprocessor system than on a single processor system?

A multithreaded system comprising of multiple user-levelthreads cannot make use of the different processors in a multiprocessorsystem simultaneously. The operating system sees only a single processand will not schedule the different threads of the process on separateprocessors. Consequently, there is no performance benefit associatedwith executing multiple user-level threads on a multiprocessor system.
