Because they're wasteful. Do you know how many years it takes for them to disintegrate? THOUSANDS!!! ** Not really. Paper "disintegrates" when wet. The only paper that takes longer to biodegrade are coated with plastic for carrying items that may leak. Oftentimes such bags are used for take out, deliveries or specialized sizes. A typical grocery bag must be kept dry while in use.

The reason presented back when plastic bags were being considered was that making paper bags required us to kill too many trees to make them. Since that time, recycling processes have improved and plastic bags have virtually taken over.

The restoration of paper bags to common usage is unlikely since it is now cost-effective to use plastic bags, despite their impact on the environment due to improper disposal practices.

Some convenience issues include:

  • They take up more space.
  • They are harder to store because of midew and rot.
  • They tear easily and therefore do not carry as much weight.
  • They easily transfer roaches and other vermin to your home

Some environmental issues include:

  • Causes pollution: Paper production emits air pollution, specifically 70 percent more pollution than the production of plastic bags
  • Consumes energy: Even though petroleum goes into making plastic, it turns out that making a paper bag consumes four times as much energy as making a plastic bag
  • Consumes water: The production of paper bags uses three times the amount of water it takes to make plastic bags
  • Inefficient recycling: The process of recycling paper can be inefficient -- often consuming more fuel than it would take to make a new bag
  • Produces waste: According to some measures, paper bags generate 80 percent more solid waste
  • Biodegrading difficulties: Surprisingly, the EPA has stated that in landfills, paper doesn't degrade all that much faster than plastics

People who are environmentally conscious would use paper bags for garbage since paper bags will biodegrade and plastic bags will not. Also, some municipalities require paper bags for lawn waste.

Plastic bags take a very long time to decompose. Plastic items and plastic bags can be found everywhere nowadays - a walk along the tide line of a beach is proof of that. Cattle may eat a plastic bag that has blown into the field. Animals may become trapped inside a plastic bag. Though plastic is a useful material, care of use and disposal is important to the environment.

They do offer them you just have to ask. Paper bags cost more money and people throw them away instead of recycling. It is awful how many bags are thrown away each year.

Is it good using your own bags?

What do you mean by "it"? If you mean, is it better to use your own bags versus using paper or plastic bags, then the answer is "yes." Canvas bags are the environmentally friendliest kind of bags to use, and those made from scrap canvas or organic cotton are best, in my opinion.
