A dumb terminal refers to a CRT and keyboard that have no processing power of their own. It is simply an input and output device wired into another computer. It was common in the days of the mainframe, to allow many users to interface with a single computer relatively inexpensively. It can also be referred to as the ultimate in 'thin client.' All of the functions, activities and work were done on the main computer.

A dumb terminal is like a display monitor that has no processing capabilities. A dumb terminal is simply an output device that accepts data from the CPU. In contrast, a smart terminal is a monitor that has its own processor for special features, such asbold and blinking characters. Dumb terminals are not as fast as smart terminals, and they do not support as many display features, but they are adequate for most applications.

Examples: Monitors, Mouse, Keyboard, Webcam...
