When there is not much demand for electricity, such as during the night, the extra electricity is used to pump water back up to a storage reservoir. Then, later in the day, when electricity demand is high, the water from the storage water is also released as an extra, producing more electricity when it is needed.
A British example of when this might be needed is when Downtown Abbey finishes and 2/3 of the viewers then go to make tea. Because Downtown Abbey has such a large audience, it is thought that a somewhat 5 million people then go to make a cup of tea [or coffee or Hot Chocolate or whatever] after the show has finished, thus creating a power surge. This would be an adequate excuse to use the pumped storage method of gaining energy quickly.
Coal is mined from coal mines. Liquids like oil can be pumped from wells, but solid chunks of coal cannot.
Crude oil
Have it pumped out. Septic tanks need to be pumped out at least every 5 years to get rid of all the solid material.
whenever steam is utilised as heating media, steam condensate is produced. This steam condensatecan be utilsed for steam generation at some other location and needs to be pumped, for pumping you need some intermediate storage of this condensate. For storing it we use condensate pot whose level can be controlled.
Stored energy
The method stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation.

Then, later in the day, when electricity demand is high, the water from the storage water is also released as an extra, producing more electricity when it is needed. We need them because demand for electricity fluctuates (goes up and down) and pumped storage reservoirs allow us to meet the demand.

the canals hold reservoirs and locks
the first ever pumped storage power plant was in taum sauk in ozark highlands , just east of the black river in missouri.

Man made lakes are water accumulated in reservoirs. These reservoirs are not available to be seen on maps. They are huge pits, dug out, and water is put in them for storing.

The same place as other countries.... from the sky ! The water is collected in a number of reservoirs around the UK, where it's stored until needed. It's then pumped to a water treatment plant, where it's cleaned, sterilized and pumped into the mains network.
IT IS PART OF THE UGLENA THAT IS USED FOR STORAGE
