∙ 15y agoI don't pretend to be an expert on the situation, but the term fiber optics generally refers to the next generation in data transfer. Currently, Category-5e (CAT-5e) cables are the standard in data transfer for daily use such as the internet.
Fiber optic cables are the next generation in data transfer. Instead of twisted pairs of small wires, fiber optic cables use (as the name suggests) optical fibers. Fiber optic cables are capable of faster transfer speed. Fiber optic internet is already being tested in some markets within the United States and may replace current "broadband" connections within the next few years.
Again, my experience comes from a Grade-12 Computer Engineering class a year or so back so I am not able to give any technical definitions.
