∙ 12y agoThe flags are used by the line judges to indicate various things which are under their responsibility. The most obvious is if the ball is either in or out when the ball has hit the court. Another use is hitting a foreign object in the playing area. This indicated by waving the flag backwards and forwards three times and pointing at the object. Another use is to indicate foot faults on the server or when someone is standing out of the court when the ball is hit at the serve. The final use is to indicate that the ball has hit either antennae, hit the tape below the antenna, hit the posts or the net outside the antenna or the ball passed outside the antenna and lands in court, in which case it is out.

Either that, or they are used to wave around and look good.
Flags can be used to show that the queen is at home!!! Or other reason's, like to show ships whether you are friend or foe...
