∙ 14y agoHomeric Poetry refers mainly to the two great epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey that served Classical Greece as their main source of History, Religion and Ethics.
The poems were already very old by the Classical period, and were written in a language which was partly obsolescent (Ionic). Homer was about as difficult to understand for a Classical Greek as Shakespeare is for us.
There are some minor poems which are also sometimes included with the Iliad and the Odyssey (Margites is the most well-known) - but the Iliad and the Odyssey were the main thing. Homeric poetry was what Greeks had as their Bible, their main history book, and their basic geography - nobody could live without coming into some kind of contact with Homer.
