Here are some fun facts about beluga whales

  • The vertebrae in a beluga's neck is not fused together, giving it the unusual ability to turn its head up, down and side-to-side.
  • Belugas, like other arctic whales, do not have dorsal fins (a dorsal fin causes extra heat loss and would be a major hindrance in the arctic ice), but they do have a tough dorsal ridge. They also have a thick layer of blubber that insulates them from the icy arctic waters.
  • The beluga can change the shape of its bulbous forehead, called a "melon", by blowing air around its sinuses.
  • The beluga is able to swim backwards.
  • Beluga whales have a large forehead, a sign of their high intelligence.
  • Beluga whales are, in fact, the smartest animals on earth with an average I.Q. (intelligence quotient) of 155, a level that would be considered near genius in humans.
  • Belugas mate only about once every twenty years. After a thirty day gestation period, the young are born live, usually in groups of seven or eight babies, known as "Piddlins."

Here are 3 facts about beluga whales

  1. The beluga's diet is varied, and consists of small squid, crabs, clams, shrimp, sandworms, and various kinds of fish such as capelin, sandlance, and polar and arctic cod.
  2. Male belugas reach sexual maturity at 8-9 years, females at 5 years. Mating occurs in spring, and each summer many belugas migrate in great numbers to the comparatively warm, shallow waters of fresh water rivers to calve.
  3. Adult belugas are almost completely white. Calves are dark gray ; they become lighter in color with age and at full maturity they become white, though they retain some dark color on the edge of the flippers and flukes.
