There were various types of gladiators. They did not wear a helmet apart from:

The Andabata who fought blind. He had a helmet with no eye holes, and thus no vision.

The Hoplomachus and the Murillo had a brimmed helmet.

The Secutor fought against retarius. The reratius had a net and was armed with a trident and a dagger. He had to try to catch the secutor with his net. Therefore, the secutor had a smooth helmet which enclosed the head entirely, apart from small eye-holes to give protection against the prongs of the trident. The helmet also had a rounded top, so as not to get caught in a net.

All types of gladiators, apart from the Eques wore a tunic, fought bare chested.
