Gulls, or seagulls, are aquatic birds that may subsist on fish or on other sea creatures such as mollusks (shellfish) and crustaceans. They will also kill or scavenge small mammals in their territories. Some gulls dwell almost exclusively on land, while others will also float and swim to some extent.
Gulls are technically those in the family Laridae, while the related birds, terns, are of the family Sternidae. The two groups share many of the same characteristics and ecological niches.
