You can recognize a mechanical mixture because it consists of different substances that you can see and separate out of it. Examples of mechanical mixtures are cereal and milk in a bowl, soil that contains small pebbles, twigs, and bits of leaves.

A mixture is a substance that is made up of more than one type of molecule or atom, for example, a mixture of salt and water.

To tell the difference between a pure substance and a mixture, try following these steps:

  1. Does it contain more than one visible part? ex. sand or water and oil
  2. Does it leave a precipitate when evaporated if it is a liquid?
  3. Does it separate when dissolved in water?

If the answer is yes to 1 or more of the questions above, then the substance is a mixture. If you are still doubtful, try doing more tests like putting it into a centrifuge or using paper chromatography.

I hope this helped,
