A motte-and-bailey is a form of castle. It was made of wood and many were built in Britain and France in the 11th and 12th centuries. Each took 7 to 14 days to build. There were very few Celtic/pre-norman motte and bailey castles. The Normans brought motte and bailey castles in packages like make your own furniture. The main weakness of the motte and bailey castle was that they were usually wooden and therefore burned easily.

The motte is an artificial mound on which the castle is built. At first the cstle was made from wood, later some were replaced with stone keeps.

The mound was made mostly from soil dug from the surrounding ditch or moat. Other material like stone or rubble was incorporated in layers. This was to improve drainage and solidity. Some were coverd in a layer of clay.

A wooden pallisade fence was built around the top of the motte. This was sometimes replaced with a stone wall.

These castles or villages were first built around 1000s; the Motte was built by first digging out the yes m8 moat and piling all the dirt in a certain place to make a mound of earth. Stones and boulders were put in too to make the Motte stronger. The Bailey was the yard area or in this case a village and many people lived there. A responsible Norman was made lord of the village to keep things in control. There were many different buildings in a Motte and Bailey village: a well, guardhouse, granary, stables, cookhouse, tithe barn, stone keep, houses, weapons store, living quarters, a guard room and a large manor house with its own grounds belonging to the lord. Some other Motte and Bailey villages may not have these features or have other buildings, but all villages differ. On top of the Motte was a stone/wooden keep or a lookout. This was useful, for it was high up and not as difficult to spot attackers. Placed around the Motte and Bailey was a wooden fence or Palisade. There was also a ditch or moat surrounding the Motte and Bailey. This was filled with water and waste, sometimes there was another moat dug out and filled again to make an outer Bailey as well as an inner Bailey. There was a drawbridge at the front of the village so that any unwanted guests couldn't enter if lowered. Linking the Motte and Bailey together was another drawbridge, if under attack; the drawbridge could easily be cut down. Bailey in a castle is a courtyard. In the Bailey there were guardrooms, stables, kitchens and storerooms. The Bailey would be in between the gateway and the motte.

The type of castle called motte and Bailey castle was named after the Bailey and motte inside it. The Bailey has just been described above. The motte is a keep at the top of the hill.
