All animals are heterotrophs, getting their organic molecules (food, growth) from another organism. Those that consume other organisms are predators. The larger predatory animals that consume smaller animals are carnivores (meat eaters).

The reason why the food that plants make is important not only to the plant themselves, but to other organisms, is because the nutrients that the plant makes from photosynthesis not only helps the plant but other organisms that feed off of the plant and the plant's nutrients.

The origin of all energy for life on earth is the sun. Only plants and other photosynthesizers (i.e.alge) can use the sun's energy to support their own life. All other life on Earth (heterotrophs) have to get their energy either from eating organisms that directly get their energy from the sun (plants), or by eating organisms that ate organisms that got their energy from the sun.
