Phytoplankton refers to a broad category of organisms. Many belong to the kingdom Protista, and some belong to the kingdom Monera. They are all microscopic organisms that are capable of undergoing photosynthesis.

Phytoplankton, or phytoplankton-like organisms are believed to be responsible for the Earth's first mass extinction, as their waste product, oxygen was suddenly released into the early atmosphere, which acted as a poison to early organisms that was used to the abundant sulfur in the atmosphere.

What is a phytoplanktons niche?

the phytoplanktons niche is to feed the other animals in the ocean. if the phytoplankton didnt exist the plankton, bivavles and barnacles would die. then the ghost crabs octopuses, and mulberry whelks would die.
