if you are referring to shingles it depends on the manufacturer most are a combination of fiberglass and asphalt, yes the same stuff you drive on. if you are referring to actual tiles. they also come in a variety of material, although the most popular are slate, which has a greyish color and terra cotta/ clay which is popular in warmer areas of the country and has an orange or clay color to it unless it's painted
