What are shells for on the beach?

There are shells on some beaches and none on others because the creatures that orriginally lived in the shell ie mollusks, are not abundant at the beach wthere there are no shells. Also the current at some beaches is too strong and do not allow for shells to be washed ashore.

Shells are found on beaches for a few main reasons. The most apparent is the fact that certain organisms and marine life such as perriwinkles, razor clams, oysters, and hermit crabs, require these shells to survive. For instance, the hermit crab as most know them, are surrounded by a relatively hard shell that covers their delicate a soft inner body. Without their shell, the hermit crab would be more apt to being crushed by turning rocks, or human feet, as well as other predators. In addition, when these creatures die, the shell often becomes seperated from the dead organism and can be transferred through tides and movement of water or winds, to the shoreline and beach.

They are washed up onto the beach with the waves. Did you know that sand is actually just Crushed up Shells? how cool is that!

Shells arn't for anything. Just things in the ocean that wash up on land. They are very pretty. I myself have alot and one huge one that was found in the knee deep part of the ocean.
