you can avoid medicine abuse by not overdosing on pills, not taking pills or medicine that is not proscribed to you, or you can go to therapy or medicine abuse classes so you can overcome medicine abuse or so you won't start going or getting into medicine abuse.
1. Only take your medication as directed. If you feel the medication you are taking is not addressing whatever symptom you are experiencing, contact your physician to discuss an alternate solution.
2. Discuss non-narcotic alternatives to the medication your physician is prescribing. Often there are alternatives. If your physician cannot provide one, ask your pharmacist - if the pharmacist suggests one, contact your physician and discuss it.
3. Recognize the signs of the potential for abuse, and get help if you need it. Some of these signs include: considering going to different doctors to get the same prescription written so you can get more medication than you're already prescribed; feeling shaky, sleepless or experiencing night sweats when your prescription runs out; and being obsessed with when your next dose is. Call your physician and discuss your concerns. Consider seeking the assistance of a professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist before the symptoms escalate.
