American Sign Language ASL is the language deaf people in the USA use. It is a system of finger alphabets, hand and arm movements used to mean certain words, and used by and for persons who cannot hear (deaf). Facial and body expressions can help to define meanings as well. American sign language is slightly different from French or other sign languages. American Sign Language has it's own grammatical structure and is mainly used in America, however it is one of the largest known sign languages in all of the world. International Sign Language also known as "Gestuno" is a sign language that combines all signed languages (french, american, spanish, etc) and is not commonly practiced or used. Gestuno was also very difficult to create because of the fact that some signs in one language can have a completely different meaning or even be insulting in another sign language.

British Sign language is used in Northern Ireland and by some older deaf people in Dublin. But the standard sign language in the Republic of Ireland is Irish Sign Language, which is not related to British Sign Language.Contrary to what some people might think, Sign languages are usually NOT related to spoken languages. For example, American Sign Language is completely unrelated to either Irish or British Sign Language.

In American Sign Language you pat your thigh and then snap. Some people just snap though, but if you just snap you should put your lips in the shape of the "o" in dog.

Sign language is a more universal form of communication than verbal language, but it is not universal in itself. Sign language can differ greatly between cultures and, typically, similarities come from the more obvious gestures in the respective 'dialect'. A good example of variation is American Sign language and British sign language which, whilst having some similarities, also have vast differences.

ASL has helped me so much.
